To our backers and supporters,
Thank you for sticking with us and for your continued support. The wait will be worth it!!
We have been in the lab over the course of the last few months revisiting some crucial technology obstacles that have caused significant delay in shipping v1 of our SDK. As you know our initial rollout plan in Q4 2016 and Q1 2017 didn’t go as expected, with multiple setbacks and reported issues with the product. We have since disposed of hundreds of defected units and gone back to the drawing board. As a result, Pinch has undergone tremendous redesign and re-engineering from the ground up for BOTH hardware and software. Needless to say Q1 of this year forced us to take a step back and reassess the state of our beta with a critical eye to answer the tough questions.
The bottom line is the product was simply not good enough. Our success at a broader scale was not to be realized unless we addressed 3 fundamental product friction points:
a) Ergonomics and ease of use
b) Performance and fidelity
c) Cost of production
We have hundreds of assembled units in our warehouse that we refused to ship because we didn’t want to disappoint our customers and early adopters. We really do value your continued support, and understand the folks that have requested refunds due to the time delay. We would rather GUARANTEE that you will be happy with what you receive and be late than ship a poor product. Below is what we have accomplished to meet your expectations:
LightPads(TM) to replace Pinchers
Completely Redesigned Controllers under 2mm thin enabling 6 degrees of freedom to not only track position in 3 axis but also pitch, yaw and rotation. This is huge compared to where we were only a few months ago.
Blazing Fast Performance
Achieving over 60fps under load on an iPhone 6 first generation. With a completely rewritten input driver running native outside of Unity we have utilized multi-threading and raw computational power of the smartphone. This means much more fluid and responsive interaction and limited slow-downs.
Substantially Improved Ergonomics
No more mirrors, no lenses, and no setup required to ensure we get the right field of view from the rear facing camera. We will disclose more information once our new provisional patents have been filed. For our customers, this means less steps to setup the product and a far more intuitive product experience.
Truly Scalable Production
We’ve done it with this one. We’ve eliminated 80% of the components used in our previous version to bring a product that is truly scalable. Again more detail to come once we can release photos of the product in the upcoming updates.
Much more to come this fall. Please stay tuned and thank you very much again for your support and for staying with us to the finish line.
